IRONY

IRONY: AN IMPLIED DISCREPANCY BETWEEN WHAT IS SAID AND WHAT IS MENT
VERBAL IRONY: a figure of speech in which what is said is the opposite of what is meant.
EX:"We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages."
SITUATIONAL IRONY: an outcome that turns out to be very different than what was expected.
EX: in lord of the flies the fire tht they made was meant to kill palph but by doing that it creatd a big smoke which allowed the ship cmming by to notice it causong the boys to all be rescued.
DRAMATIC IRONY:irony that occurs when the meaning of the situation is understood by the audience but not by the characters in the play.
EX:The ending is ironic because Ralph who is about to die should be happy when he sees the naval officer, instead he begins to cry. it is also ironic that the naval officer is shocked that these British boys lost all respect to civilization where he himself is part of the military and is involved in the war that is taking place so where is order there?
